Tony is one of the firm's managing partners. He is a civil litigation lawyer with extensive experience at all levels of Court, including the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Federal Tax Court. Tony's primary area of expertise is in the automobile wholesale, retail and leasing industry, dealing with matters that include debt collection, business licensing, regulation and administrative review. In addition to his commercial law practice, Tony maintains a criminal, quasi-criminal and regulatory offence practice.

SIGNIFICANT CASES

Amerato v. Ontario (Motor Vehicle Dealers Act Registrar) (2005), 257 D.L.R. (4th) 146 (Ont. C.A.) Represented a car dealer whose business licence was about to be revoked by the Registrar without a hearing. The Ontario Court of Appeal prohibited the Registrar from revoking the licence without affording a hearing before a tribunal. This frequently cited case is one of the most important in its field and has been reported in various provincial and national law reports.

Obtained an injunction and mandatory order preventing the owners of a shipping vessel from shipping a client's four cars to central Europe without having paid for them. The loss to the client would have exceeded $200,000 with little, if any, hope of ultimate recovery.

Successfully resisted an injunction application brought by a client's competitor and designed to preclude use of a client list that the client had compiled. The injunction would effectively have shut down the client's business after 20 years in the industry.

Successfully represented a client charged in a motor vehicle incident that resulted in a fatality. As a result of Tony's cross-examination of the prosecution's accident reconstruction expert, the presiding judge concluded that not only was Tony's client blameless, but that the accident was unavoidable.
